Stable Diffusion, developed by Stability AI, is one of the most influential open-source projects in AI image generation. Unlike the closed-source Midjourney and DALL-E 3, Stable Diffusion runs entirely locally, giving you complete control over data and the generation process—no privacy concerns or content moderation to worry about. For technically inclined solopreneurs, Stable Diffusion offers unmatched customization: use LoRA, ControlNet, and other extensions to fine-tune model styles, train custom face or product models, or build complex image processing workflows with ComfyUI. The community ecosystem is incredibly rich, with thousands of models and LoRAs available on Civitai. However, open-source also means a higher barrier to entry—you need a computer with at least 8GB VRAM, must learn model installation and parameter configuration, and spend time filtering community models for quality. SDXL and SD3 models have significantly improved image quality, but prompt understanding and text rendering still lag behind DALL-E 3. If you have a technical background and seek ultimate customization freedom, Stable Diffusion is the go-to choice; if you only occasionally need image generation, Midjourney or DALL-E 3 will be more convenient.
